Just received the same call now. Same source with technician's name William (#1921). Gave the same Sydney-based phone number. Went through all the same stuff about how the modem was not working properly, was a risk to viruses, malware, etc. I spent about 15 minutes trying to get as much information from him as possible. After I told him there was no PC available at this address at the moment to interrogate the modem following his instructions over the phone, he said that a technician would call at the address with a laptop to perform the check within 24-48 hours.

He did know the name/initials of the individual who holds the Telstra account at the address where I took the call (not me), that may have been coincidental, however, given the amount of public address information that is freely available.

These guys rang on another number. said they were Telstra and we had an issue with our router and was trying to get me to scan it.
I asked for his ID (Indian accent) told me he was Ryan Smith and gave me a random number (GAP 3446)
Surprisingly he gave me a No to ring (02) 8310 5453.
I rang back. They answered straight up Telstra Technical Dept. When do you get straight through to Telstra???
When I said I was going to report him, he started mocking me. Who are you going to report me to? The Police? The Attorney General?
Game up chum. Telstra would never talk back like that

We had the exact same thing happen to us at our workplace and I told him that I would call him back tomorrow and he gave me a name Stephen Richards and was adomant that I call him back. When I did they said they were Telstra but I had my suspicions and ended the call. Sounded so dodgy!!

Caller: Eric Wilson from "Telstra"

Watch out, these guys are scumbags and will do anything to get into your personal files and data. This Eric Wilson from Telstra guy called me and tried the same as the above. I told him I was going to do my checks first before I give any personal details. So he gave me his ID number (ID D705954) which is not the same as yours and also gave me the number (03) 9016 0518. So I called that number and another guy picked up the phone. I asked for Eric Wilson and he said, he was not available but he could help me. I told him that Eric Wilson is a fake and he hung up. It goes to show, we need to now interrogate all calls. Can the police stop this!!!
If someone can trace that number through the police they might be able to track where these guys are.

Cheers

Just had a call from this number telling me I had issues with my router and that someone had been doing illegal things with my internet. Gave me his name of Eric Wilson from Telstra and his employee number TLS 0742 and told me to ring this number to verify I was talking to Telstra. I asked him the name of the account holder and he got it wrong so I hung up.

I had a call from (03) 9856 0202. The caller said that I had a problem with my router and was trying to get me to scan it. I went through a few steps with him. Got me to do the "assoc" command and asked me to check the CLSID which he also gave me to convince me that he is legit. I told them I had my suspicions and he gave me his ID and and name Eric Wilson and phone number (02) 8310 5453. I googled the number and found this site. So I stopped talking and hanged up.

We received many calls from (03) 9335 6555. We have had a number of calls; probably every day for the last few weeks. We are a private number. But tonight someone actually spoke, most the other times they have been silent.
He said he was from our internet provider and that people had been trying to access our computer/internet and that he would need to access it to check it etc.

We knew it was suss, my husband asked for his name and Telstra ID, he said it was ALex Williams and his ID was DI0008656.
we asked what address we lived; he said the wrong suburb and asked for a number to ring back. He gave us (02) 8310 5453 which I thought was even more odd since he had rung from a Melbourne number.

My husband said he would ring him back in the mean time we looked up reverse number and found there had been a lot of issues with this number and did not ring back.

They rang again not long after like 15 minutes and I answered they asked my husband I said he was predisposed and I said I know you are a scammer so don't call back, felt like saying more than this but not worth my time.
It's so frustrating that they are getting away with this. I will also be reporting this to Telstra, but I bet nothing gets done. If so many people have been rung by this number and given the SYD number why don't they cut it off surely they have the power to do that. So frustrating. I hope these people get caught, makes me sick.

Creepy... I got a very similar call (Indian accent), while I was actually on the phone to a genuine Telstra Rep... The person was mildly arrogant when I questioned his Telstra Id and told me to go to my computer and hit Control R. Figured this was a scam hung up. I rang 02 830 5453 and asked what company I had gotten through to, I was told it was the technical department, and how did I get the number...then I was rudely not to ring back... Thank you to the people who wrote on this blog it helped me believe my suspicion.

I got 2 calls from a "Ryan Williams" and "Jane Smith" both with thick accents. They usually use very generic and impossible to trace names.

They claimed to be calling from "Your internet service provider" and if you don't prompt them with a providers name they'll assume you're with Telstra and say they're from the "Telstra technical department" which is NOT true.

They will tell you that your internet security has been breached and you have hackers.
They will ask you "How many devices are connected to the internet?", "What kind of devices (phone, pc, laptop etc)?" and "how many users in the household?", "
how far away is the router from your main devices?"
All this information is gathered to try and assess your security and valuables to potentially rob you.

You will be asked to open up an internet browser and download TeamViewer.
They will usually spell out the website in the alphanumeric alphabet to sound more legit and keep their command prompts hard to get a grasp on until you've pressed enter and it might be too late.

They may also ask you to input keyboard commands like "ctrl + windows" and "ctrl + windows+ R" or something that will bring up the Run programs box and PC command prompts which have high access to nearly everything in your computer files.

NEVER do anything they ask or answer any of their questions. They are scammers and criminals and have no authorisation from Telstra to be making these calls.

This is a scam. I received a phone call from this number saying that it was a call from the Optus technical department and telling me I had a problem with my router. The guy asked me to download and enable TeamViewer. As an IT guy myself, I immediately smelled something suspicious. FYI, TeamViewer is for allowing a remote party to control your computer. That means the guy can install spyware or whatever to steal your information from your computer. I asked the guy his name and a phone number to verify he is really from Optus. He gave me this (02) 8310 5453 number and said his name was Eric Wilson and Employee# OTS 80214. I asked that guy whether I could verify the number from the Optus support web page, he told me that was a new number and had not yet been updated to the Optus web page. I called that number and the other guy picked up the phone saying "Optus Technical Department" as a greeting. I asked him whether I could verify the number was from Optus. He confirmed me yes but I could not find the number from Optus. To cut this short, I went back to the first guy who was holding on the phone. I told him to give me instruction to check the router myself. He asked me for my email address. I told him you should know my email address. Then he hang up. 15 mins later I called that same (02) 8310 5453 number from a different phone. The guy picked up the phone with a greeting "Technical Department", and I asked "It is Telstra". He immediately replied "Telstra Technical Department". It is a scam for sure. The same number suddenly changed from Optus to Telstra! Be aware!

Same call! This time he told me to ring the same number, but that it was Optus tech dept.! He must have made a lucky guess, because I told him we weren't with Telstra. I was about to call Optus directly, but thought to check here first. Good thing I did, my hunch was correct from the moment he called. No wonder he wanted me to call right away on my mobile, while he stayed on the (land) line, no doubt to tell his mate to answer with Optus this time, not Telstra!!

Alex wanted me to start Teamview which made me very suspicious and I hung up. Contacted Telstra and was advised that this was not genuine. Be careful of these a...holes.
