If you have access to the web you can go to www.reverseaustralia.com.au type in the phone number and it will tell you who is calling or give you reports that it is a scam etc.
(02) 8103 3106 IS FALSE - it is a scam - the number they give to ring back on is false – the scammers have infiltrated the network system) although a person will answer this 2nd number (Centrelink answering the phone - not that is a dead give away!!!!!
(02) 8378 7970 IS FALSE – although it will give the standard Centrelink recorded message (the number they provide is false although it does give the standard Centrelink recorded message ,
They start off by telling them their personal reference number is 080456 (same for everyone) so they think it is genuine. It can be female or male If Female it is Sarah The person to ring back is Peter.
The scam is they will say the person has a backpay of $1500+ etc (this is what gets them as they think they have a windfall ) , but to get it they have to go to Woolworths etc and buy $4x 100 ITUNE CARDS When they have bought the cards , they get the person to ring back and they will be told the badge number of the person to ask for at Centrelink and take the cards there. BUT
On ringing the number he was given (02) 8103 3106 - A PERSON ANSWERED IMMEDIATELY - now anyone who has rung Centrelink will know that does NOT happen
The way these scammers then make their money is they get the old people to scratch off the back of the cards and give them the Number of the card - this then gives the scammers $400 of ITUNE TO onsell
So if they have been scammed, and have given those numbers , when they go to Centrelink with the cards - the cards are WORTHLESS and they have paid out $400
If you have elderly parents tell them the following 1 Centrelink (or Banks etc) WILL NOT ring them 2 Centrelink phone numbers are 1300 numbers not 02 ?????? (02) 8103 3106 IS FALSE - it is a scam and someone will answer saying they are Centrelink (02) 8378 7970 IS FALSE – although it will give the standard Centrelink recorded message 3 Why would you have to buy $400 of Itune cards to get your backpay - most older persons would not even know what an ITUNES card is for. 4 If institutions want something they will write to them on OFFICIAL letterhead 5 DO NOT give any personal information including Home address, CRN #, Bank details (ie why would Centrelink ask you for your CRN number when they would have that on the computer screen in front of them)
Luckily he rang me before buying the cards – like most older persons he thought it was a genuine call and had no idea what a Itunes card was WE prevented him from being scammed this time. but there would be thousands of vulnerable elderly people out there who are caught every day
I went to Centrelink and they were aware of the scam and simply said call “Scam Watch 1300 795 995

Its a scam, he rang my mother-in-law who became a widow last week and I call it torment, as he worried her about her pension and have to call. Just parasites. Told her if they call again to just hang up. Just horrible.

Just received an automated call from (02) 8103 3106 claiming to be the ATO, something about fraud and to not ignore this call. Guessing it's the same scum who are claiming to be Centrelink!

(02) 8103 3106 is a scam. They pretend to be the ATO headquarters in Martin Place, Sydney and claim you have evaded taxes. They are pushy and threaten you with legal action.

August 2017: This is the second call this year, which says pension file has been moved to Canberra. Also says we have not responded to (the scammer's) repeated attempts to reach us (well, that is true!) We did not respond to calls, but reported the scam 2nd time around. Same phone number as "nearly scammed" (above) also same "application number" as "nearly scammed.' We reported this scam to local MP's electoral office this time.

Now they are pretending they are from Centrelink - Woman rang this morning, but message was prerecorded. Very similar number to the lot stating they are from the ATO, though that was an Irish sounding man with a phone number also starting with 02.
