Save the number in your phone under the name "pest" or similar, then next time it rings, you can see who's calling and ignore it.

Unfortunately even if you register your number on the 'Do not call' list charities can still call you though it is sposed to stop telemarketers but some still get through. I was getting at least 20 calls a day from different places and I was pissed off as mine is a private number but cause it is a recycled number they call for the original owners of the number cause that is what it shows on their lists. Most numbers you can look up to see who had it originally. If you have a smart phone then you can block the number then you will only receive a text message to say you have a missed call from that number.

If they want me to bloody respond, they should leave a damned message. I refuse to answer numbers I don't recognise.

I received a hang up call from this number, looked it up here, then got 3 more alternative in the week. They finally spoke to me on the last, I told them I didn't appreciate the hang up calls, and would not contribute. I also told them I had put the number in my phone as "Do not Answer", and would never answer their calls ever again. The polite young lady said she would pass it on to her supervisor.

Some (perhaps all) of these calls are coming from a telemarketing company acting on behalf of the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children.

They are using an auto-dialler that continually calls numbers in the database so that here is always someone answering a call as a telephonist is ending another call.

This results in thousands of calls answered by people like you and me, in the middle of their dinner at home or when busy at work, that get dropped by the auto-dialler as soon as we answer, because there is no telephonist available to speak to us.

Surely if they are trying to raise money for charity, having an auto-dialler placing thousands of calls that are dropped as soon as answered, is a huge waste of money.

Why not design a dialling system that only dials when your telephonists release the previous call. Sure, your productivity might drop a little from them having to wait for a call to be picked up ... but you wouldn't be pissing off thousands of people who will NEVER listen favorably to what you have to say, in the event you finally do speak to them.

I guess these geniuses have worked out that a bunch of dumped phone calls is cheaper than having a bunch of staff siting there, waiting for a phone to answer. Obviously, no thought is given to the disruption this causes to the community.

Charities should also not be exempt from the non call register. If we don't want random people calling our home and interrupting our dinner at night, we should be able to easily prevent it.

And let's not forget ... the companies that are calling us are NOT charities. They are profitable businesses providing their services to charities.

Called about 7:00pm at night, I answered within 2-3 rings, no person on other end - silence, then about 5 seconds later line dropped out as if hung up.

Very annoying, I am on the do not call register, and have recently checked it was renewed.. not happy.

The caller is claiming to be from the 'Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children', as per their recorded message when the number is dialed. Website: http://www.ridbc.org.au/
I very much doubt that it is a scam because the police would be on to it immediately. If you are concerned, call the RIDBC.
