Voicemail left after a call not even long enough to actually answer, machine-generated message saying they are the federal crime investigation unit, that Im a prime suspect (didnt mention in what crime...) and that my house is under surveillance, and that I should not ignore the message and call them back immediately. Called them back, got hung up on after the second time I asked who I was talking to.
Im pretty confident the feds would be at a persons door before they'd be leaving a machine-generated voicemail...
Had the same recorded message to my mobile today, atleast the number is being presented via calling number display as opposed to No Caller ID.
When will the government pass privacy laws to provide confidence that a call is legitimately coming from the department they claim to be from ie. showing the main call-in number from that department. This will certainly reduce the avenue that scammers have to scam people.
It would also be useful that once a number is reported as a scam with so many complaints that it is immediately investigated ie the claims are correct and substantiated... either a block is done at the point of entry to the Telephone network ie. Exchange, and the lease holder of that number has to provide reasons why the number should be restored to them!
Our Government do not take scams seriously enough!
I just had this happen to me. Left a garbled message, so I rang back. 'David Brown' said he was representing the ATO and that he had an affidavit out for me having an outstanding liability with Tax Office. I said I had no liability and that I have an accountant. When asked his name again by my hubby, he hung up! So funny, as my hubby just left the ATO after many years!! 100% scam. Claim they are ATO and house is under surveillance. Have reported it to the ATO and they are referring it on to the AFP. Called me today. Officer Xavier king (indian accent) said I had an affadavit against me for tax evasion, that I was under investigation and my house under surveillance. Wanted to know who my solicitor or barrister was and I said "this is rubbish" and hung up. Got a call earlier today. Reported to scam watch i had the same bloody call. I am shocked, I received a call from this same number, i then listened to the voice mail, and it said that i have to call back, otherwise there are consequences.
I called back, and spoke to a man with a very thick indian accent, he looked my call up from my call back number, and said my full name. Then he said he needs my solicitors details as they have to send the affidavit to my lawyers, asap, as i am under criminal investigation for tax evasion, it sounds very dodgy, but at the same time he was very rude, and he said to get a pen, i said i dont have a pen, and then he shouted, and hung up, i dont know what to do?
Just had the same thing happen. As soon as I gave my name they hung up. Same ATO message. Should find out who the phone carrier is I got the same automated voice message saying "Your house is under surveillance, so do not disregard this message. Call me back as soon as possible on (02) 6188 6075. I will repeat (02) 6188 6075. Remember delay in calling us back may end in legal prosecution. Thank you". I called him back and it was a man with a thick Indian accent and he stated he was from the Federal Investigation Unit and something blah, I couldn't understand him as the line wasn't clear and the conversation didn't make any sense to me. When I asked where he was calling from it was from some Investigation unit with a rather English sounding name. Just knew it was a scam from the whole experience, anyway nothing made sense. I have reported this to the local 131444 as well as Scam watch. Dirty Scum. What is the point of this crap.
Call now or you are at risk of prosecution?
What's the game and what is their pay off?

I too received a voicemail saying my house was under surveillance and I was the prime suspect, and needed to call them back. Figured it was dodgy - as if the police tell you when you are under surveillance LOL. But anyway I rang back, because I wanted some fun, and they told me it was the Tax Office and asked for my name. I said I would call the ATO directly, to ensure the call wasn't fraudulent and the guy hung up straight away. Just had a phone call from these people claiming to be from the ATO Crime and Prosecution department. They claimed that I needed to provide details of my solicitor and/or lawyer in relation to tax evasion. I spoke with a super dodgy Indian who then told me he loved speaking with me and my voice was lovely as he had thought he would be phoning an 'old lady'. When I questioned why he would think that if he had my date of birth on file, he told me he hadn't been provided with that. However he did have the correct email and home address. Scary. Beware. Have reported to real ATO on 1800 008 540 I got one this morning from someone saying how I owe tax and there will be a warrant out for my arrest. I phoned the taxation department and reported the scam. At least I found out I am not in trouble. Just received a call and when challenged about his legitamacy he hung up on me.
Called number again and another person answered then they hung up.
Just had same thing happen. Had missed call from this number and they left a computer generated voice mail. Sounds like when the Australian tax office got hacked our details were taken. Very strange. They threaten with affidavit and house under surveillance. What bullsh*t, I didn't call back. It's s scam Yes, exactly the same spiel, only my call looped a couple of times for the first few words (the recording must be wearing out!) Hung up even before they could finish the number I was to call them back on. just got 2 calls from them too I just got a call from this number with same automated voice message as @Val received. Saying it was the ATO and I was prime person in an affidavit and that my house is under surveillance. The ATO sits outside your house now?! I hung up as they were saying do not not ignore this message. Thanks to everyone on this forum for posting your experiences it helps to get the word out there they are scammers. It very obvious that if its a recording its not real, scammers are getting lazy.
