Voicemail left after a call not even long enough to actually answer, machine-generated message saying they are the federal crime investigation unit, that Im a prime suspect (didnt mention in what crime...) and that my house is under surveillance, and that I should not ignore the message and call them back immediately. Called them back, got hung up on after the second time I asked who I was talking to.
Im pretty confident the feds would be at a persons door before they'd be leaving a machine-generated voicemail...

Had the same recorded message to my mobile today, atleast the number is being presented via calling number display as opposed to No Caller ID.

When will the government pass privacy laws to provide confidence that a call is legitimately coming from the department they claim to be from ie. showing the main call-in number from that department. This will certainly reduce the avenue that scammers have to scam people.

It would also be useful that once a number is reported as a scam with so many complaints that it is immediately investigated ie the claims are correct and substantiated... either a block is done at the point of entry to the Telephone network ie. Exchange, and the lease holder of that number has to provide reasons why the number should be restored to them!

Our Government do not take scams seriously enough!

I just had this happen to me. Left a garbled message, so I rang back. 'David Brown' said he was representing the ATO and that he had an affidavit out for me having an outstanding liability with Tax Office. I said I had no liability and that I have an accountant. When asked his name again by my hubby, he hung up! So funny, as my hubby just left the ATO after many years!!

100% scam. Claim they are ATO and house is under surveillance. Have reported it to the ATO and they are referring it on to the AFP.

Called me today. Officer Xavier king (indian accent) said I had an affadavit against me for tax evasion, that I was under investigation and my house under surveillance. Wanted to know who my solicitor or barrister was and I said "this is rubbish" and hung up.

There is an option on the iPhone to block the number. I did just that. The ATO uses more formal means to contact you, e.g. snail mail - so safe to ignore.

No matter how legitimate this person sounds, ring the actual ATO on 1800 008 540 to confirm that they have actually been in contact with you and to check that everything is fine. I was called from (02) 6188 6075 this morning, and he sounded extremely legitimate. But after ringing the ATO, and discovering it was a scam, I reported it and blocked the number.

Two missed calls from the number today and yes it showed up as (02) 6188 6075 (Canberra Number) with the same message about "you are a suspect"; "your house is under surveillance" etc etc etc. I tried to call it back but it didn't connect so I too could have a bit of fun with them. For some it could be very scary. I image if my 83 year old mother got the call she'd be beside herself.

Complete scam. A Xavier Ken wanted to speak to me - scary thing was he knew my full name. Went through the whole spoil and asked if I had a solicitor. I said I did, he wanted me to call that person I said sure thing. Who is it i need their details. Actually im a solicitor - (im not) and he hung up straight away.

Feel like calling him back constantly with my on spam calls just to annoy him.

Hi I got the same phone call. The guy had a thick accent and sounded very odd. When I said I was willing to settle it he said I had to get in my car and drive to what I understood as the post office and purchase these Government Certified Vouchers in 200 amounts., whilst he remained on the phone. Alarm bells!! When I asked him if I could speak to someone else in the office he said it was not possible. And it went on and on. Quite creepy. Funny in retrospect!!

Hi I got the same scenario just now on the 28 February 2017. I phoned my accountant and he had the good idea of putting the number into Google and reading all these comments.
It is a scam. Ignore.
