Daniel from the Technical Department of Telstra says hackers are going to get my personal details from my computer. He sounded Indian or Pakistani - not that I care, but I managed to keep him on the line for 12 minutes by having someone at the front door, then rain and having to shut my windows. They knew my name (not first) and address and home phone number so they have got some data base from someone here in Australia. I asked him his number so I could call him back and he gave me 0085231927420. Don't get sucked into their game and see if you can delay them, as the longer they are with someone who won't get scammed the less time they have to scam someone who may. This is the 3rd time in the last week or so, and they use different numbers as I put them into my home phone as a scam after each call.

First call received at 11.40am ANZAC day from the above number. Usual internet service scam message. It is helpful to know that the calls are not generated via our Australian telephone exchanges but are operating via the Internet broadband. This is why our federal government has no control over the phone traffic, and your phone company (Telstra, Optus Vodaphone etc) cannot do much about the traffic either. The technology for this is called VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol). The operator wears a headset and the VOIP phone is plugged into the computer (VOIP is a high-tech version of the old office PABX systems used inside large departments/offices). You can detect it is VOIP by the "gap" that occurs between hearing and speaking (technically it is "packet loss"). VOIP allows the user to mask their origins by using a phone number and blocking their real ID. Service may go via multiple routing points to make it difficult for tracing back to the original source (hence if you redial the number you are never connected to the call centre). A startling way of dealing with them is to prevent them reading off their repetitious spiel on their computer screen. Instead of challenging them about being from Telstra (or the NBN or ATO or Commonwealth Public Prosecution etc) is to take them by surprise by suggesting that their call has been diverted to an investigating agency. "This is Operation 'Call Mantra'. Your call has being intercepted for logging and recording as evidence. You have violated the India Telegraph Act which carries a maximum fine of one million rupees and a mandatory prison sentence of 15 years. Your calls have been monitored. Your system is bugged for surveillance. Your call centre is about to be raided. You will be arrested, fined, imprisoned." A basic spiel like that takes them off guard. It crushes their mask of pretending to be from Telstra etc. You can figure out your own spiel. Or act like Manuel from Fawlty Towers! You can learn more about one famous arrest and bust-up of one operation where the mastermind was a 24 yr old named Sagar Thakkar (check for the stories on the Net). Don't be afraid to speak back. These people are criminals. They have no moral concern about hurting others and represent an angry generation of envious individuals who have pathetic dreams of avarice.

Caller: Guy claimed to be from Telstra Because I have had one such call each day for last week, initially they said I had a problem with my router, and that they would have to cut it off. But of course it is still going fine. Second last time they called I said how do I know you are from Telstra. If you are you can give me a phone number to call you back on. They just hung up.
Last time then called I asked him again for a number so I could call him back he gave me same number you mentioned 0085231927420. When I asked where he was he said Melbourne. I said that is not a Melbourne number. He insisted it was. I then said don't call a gain I will call you.

They are horrible waste of oxygen and my time. Surely Telstra can and should be forced to block these callers.

I no longer answer calls from numbers I am not familiar with. instead, I pick up, let it connect then hang up immediately in the hope that they will at least be charged for the call and also in the hope that they will think its a bogus number and wont call again. Then I look the number up on this site to see what other people have had to say about it.

Caller: Telstra Telstra dude said my internet was being used by overseas hackers, wanted me to download a file to fix my internet. I used an iPad then a Linux box which thew him off his game, he eventually started swearing and said I should watch out as he will be selling access to my internet connection.
I don't use Telstra for phone or internet but managed to keep him busy for some 37 min and really rattled him

The above number rang I said "hello" at least 3 times and they hung up. If you find them, teach them how to count when dreaming up a telephone number. Serial pests breathing our good air.!!!

Caller: Someone from Telstra This is the 3rd time that they have called today claiming that my Internet connection is going to be disconnected or that the speed of the connection is slower than what it should be. They claim to be from Telstra but they very much sound like they're from some call center trying to scam. After I dropped my bundle and resorted to telling them off for the 3rd time they've called today, they actually hung up on me.

These people try to connect to your pc and run syskey to password protect it and lock you out. They will then ask for $400 to unlock it which they will probably not do anyway after you have given them multiple itunes voucher codes for payment. Plenty of people on youtube recording them if you want a laugh and to see what they do.

I did an old Telstra trick of dialing number 1. then left it off the hook for a few minutes. But if it is the ones claiming to be from the technical department of Telstra I get these calls from about 8 different numbers each week. One even spoke to me in her own language.

Answered call and ethnic person requested to speak to MRS husbands name. I said no one here by that name. He said oh you’ll do. I’m calling from telstra you have an issue with your internet. I said hang up a second. I know you are a scammer - how would you feel if us Australians started up call centres faking your kind of accents and trying to scam your mum or grandma. He proceeded to call me a C U Next Tuesday and hung up on me. Same number had called two doz times since and hung up.

No message left on my answering machine but if I do catch some clown claiming to be from Telstra's Technical Department on a live call I just swear at the creature & hang up.
I can certain there's no such department: I worked at Telstra/Telecom as a technician for over 30 years & never heard of that one!

Will not leave message ,it must be a scam call. I have had 6 days free of these PEST and today they start again, so far 3 today. What every you do do not answer the call in person. leave it to the answer machine. Last week I was stupid and answered the call in person and ended up getting calls ever 20 mins, last one at 8.58 pm. SOMEBODY must be able to stop these unwanted calls may Bill Shorten, should put this problem on his to do list.es
